Palak Dal Khichdi recipe

Key Ingredients

  • 150-200 gms Spinach (Palak)  chopped/paste
  • 2 mid size Onions, chopped
  • 1.5 tsp Ginger garlic paste
  • 2 Tomatos chopped
  • 1 1/2 cup Rice
  • 1 cup Dal (Moong or Masur)
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin powder
  • 1-2 bay leaves
  • 1-2 dry red chilli
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Red chilli powder
  • 4-5 Curry leaves
  • 1 tsp Ghee
  • Green chilli whole 2 nos
  • 2 cups of Water
  • Mustard Oil 1 tbsp
  • Freshly chopped corriander leaves 50 gms

Preparation:

1. Take the rice in a bowl and wash it nicely. Then soak it for 10-15 mins. Similarly wash the dal and soak it in water.

2. Take a kadhai or a pressure cooker (for fast cooking). Pour the oil in it and heat it on a medium flame. Once the oil heats, add bay leaves, mustard seeds, dry red chillis, curry leaves, fresh ginger garlic paste and saute the mix.

3. To it, add the onion and saute. Then add tomatos, green chilli and cook for 2-3 mins. Then add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder, and mix nicely. Let the mix cook well till it releases the oil to the surface. Take care not to burn the masalas, so keep stirring and add little sprinkle of water if required. Add salt to taste.

4. Now, to the above, add the dal and rice and 2 cups of water. Let cook for 3-4 mins. Keep stirring well.

5. Now add the Palak paste to the mix and lock the cooker. Let cook for 15 mins or atleast 2-3 whistles. Cool it down and open the cover.

6. Then add ghee to the Khichdi and shift it to a serving bowl.

7. Garnish the serve with freshly chopped corriander leaves and green chillis with some more drops of ghee. Your Palak Dal Khichdi is ready to serve. Serve with Dahi and papad.
